Where should a solar inverter be installed at home?

The inverter wall deserves the same care as the panel layout.

A solar inverter often sits on an external wall or in a sheltered utility area. The nearest wall can still be the wrong wall. The installer has to consider the wall surface, water exposure, heat, access for service, cable routes and the rest of the electrical installation before marking mounting points.

For a self-consumption solar PV installation in Peninsular Malaysia, the Energy Commission’s June 2026 guideline puts the location inside a wider design process. It names site plans, equipment layout diagrams, system diagrams, electrical schematics, equipment installation diagrams and structural drawings as part of the design record, prepared and certified by a qualified and competent person.[23]

A project photograph is a reference, not a specification. Inhome Solar’s project page shows one residential arrangement with a white wall-mounted inverter, two enclosures above it and cable connections below.[32] Treat the photograph as an example of an installed arrangement. The selected equipment and the property decide the final location.

Choose a wall you can reach later

The equipment needs a clear approach. A wall hidden behind stacked boxes, a locked cabinet or a later renovation will make inspection harder, even if the original installation looked tidy. Leave the proposed area in the conversation when you plan shelves, awnings, extensions or other fixtures.

Think about the person who will need to inspect the installation in a few years. Can they reach the equipment without moving household storage? Can the status display and nearby protection equipment be seen without climbing around obstacles? These are practical site questions, not decorating details.

The site plan and equipment layout should record the answer before anything is mounted.[23]

Keep water, heat and clutter out of the plan

An inverter’s environmental limits depend on the selected equipment. An Australian Government consumer guide uses a shaded external wall or a garage close to the switchboard as one example, and says a site visit can surface issues with inverter positioning before installation.[34] That is general homeowner guidance, not a Malaysian compliance rule; local requirements, the selected equipment documents and the site design still control the proposal.

A covered porch, balcony or storeroom may look suitable from the doorway, yet still expose the unit to rain run-off, trapped heat or poor access. Ask the installer to state the equipment’s environmental rating, required clearances and protection from direct rain or water paths in the proposal.

Do not build a tight cabinet around the inverter simply to hide it. The installer should confirm how the unit will release heat, how the surrounding area will stay clear and how future inspection will take place. Keep it away from known leaks, heat-producing appliances and spaces that become storage rooms six months after the installation.

The same care applies to the wall itself. The installer should confirm that the surface and fixing method suit the selected equipment and that any nearby doors, windows, drains or air-conditioning units will not interfere with the finished arrangement.

The inverter is one part of the electrical layout

A short route from the roof is useful, but it does not settle the placement. The inverter has to sit within an arrangement that accounts for the roof, cables, distribution board, meter area and protection equipment. ST’s guideline also tells consumers to refer to the technical and other documents published by the Electricity Utility Company for the design, installation, testing, commissioning and operation of a grid-connected solar PV system.[23]

If the proposed wall changes, ask for the drawings to change with it. A verbal explanation on a site visit is not a replacement for an updated equipment layout or electrical schematic. The guideline places the preparation and certification of those drawings with a qualified and competent person.[23]

Electrical work, supervision, testing and commissioning are for qualified Electrical Contractors and Competent Persons registered with the Commission.[23] Do not remove covers, alter wiring or try to confirm an electrical rating from a photograph. Send photographs for the first discussion, then let the site review settle the technical details.

Leave utility access and labels visible

Solar equipment may be installed near an existing meter or distribution board, so the arrangement should preserve access to the equipment that other workers may need to reach. The ST guideline notes that a grid-connected premises has two sources of power, from the utility mains and from the solar PV installation.[23]

It also calls for a clearly legible solar PV label at conspicuous locations on the equipment and electrical installation, so people working there know that solar generation is present.[23] Ask where the labels, protection devices and isolation points will be placed, and what the homeowner should leave untouched.

The owner or occupier has responsibility for the management, control, operation, maintenance and safety of the solar PV and electrical installation up to the point of interconnection under the guideline.[23] That makes access worth discussing before the wall is covered by storage or a new structure.

Send useful photos before the site visit

A few ordinary photographs can shorten the first conversation. Take one wide photo of the proposed wall from floor to ceiling, one of the nearby roof eaves and drainage path, one of the meter and distribution-board area without opening a cover, and one showing shelves, awnings, air-conditioning units or other obstructions. Add any renovation, extension or EV-charger plans that may change the electrical layout.

Take the photos from a safe position. Leave out identity documents, house numbers and private details that an installer does not need. A photograph helps an installer prepare for a site review; it does not give a suitability verdict.

Questions to put in the proposal

Ask why the proposed wall was selected, what environmental limits and clearances apply to the chosen model, how the cables and protection equipment will be arranged, how access to the meter and distribution board will be kept, and who will test and commission the system. Ask what drawings, equipment handbooks and handover records you will receive as well.[23][34]

If the model or location changes, request the updated documents. This is especially important when a renovation or new fixture is planned for the same wall.
