Most homeowners begin with the TNB bill. It gives a useful record of recent consumption. It does not show whether the home uses most of its electricity in the middle of the day, after work or late at night.

That timing matters because the solar system and the household may be producing and using electricity at different hours. A good first conversation starts with the home's routine, not just one monthly number.

Solar production follows sunlight

Solar photovoltaic modules generate electricity, and the U.S. Department of Energy explains that batteries store solar photovoltaic energy for use at night or when weather keeps sunlight from reaching the panels.[22] That is the basic reason the hours of household use belong in a solar discussion.

During daylight, some appliances may be running while the panels are producing electricity. After sunset, the home still needs electricity even though the panels are no longer receiving sunlight. The exact balance depends on the property, the equipment and the household routine, so an article cannot turn the clock into a promised result.

A similar bill can hide very different routines

Two homes can record a similar monthly total and still use electricity differently. One may have someone working from home with cooling and computers running through the afternoon. Another may be quiet until the family returns from work and school, then use more power in the evening.

Note when the larger loads normally run. Air-conditioners, water heaters, pumps, induction cooking, home offices, workshops and EV charging can all change the pattern. You do not need to turn that list into a self-calculated solar size. It gives the installer a more honest picture of the week behind the bill.

Give the installer a simple week of context

Say whether the home is usually occupied during the day, which appliances run before lunch, and what tends to switch on after work. If cooling is used mostly in the afternoon, say so. If water heating happens before the household leaves or after dinner, include that too.

These details do not replace meter records or a site assessment. They help the team ask better questions about the proposed array, the inverter arrangement and the way the system will connect to the property.

A useful note to send with your bill

"The house is occupied from 8am to 5pm," or "Most cooling and water heating happens after 6pm," is already helpful context. Add any planned EV charger, renovation or new appliance so the installer knows what may change after the first conversation.

Do not use daytime use as a sizing shortcut

TNB's public solar page says its calculator uses the monthly bill or consumption as an input, while the final installation size is determined after a site assessment.[57] That distinction matters. Daytime use is one part of the design conversation, not a reason to choose a system size from a bill alone.

The roof, shade, available electrical supply, distribution board, cable route and the property's future plans still need to be checked. A panel photograph can show a roof arrangement, but it cannot confirm those details or predict the result for another home.

The load profile belongs in the design

Malaysia's Energy Commission guideline for solar photovoltaic installations includes the consumer installation's load profile before and after the solar installation. Its information form also asks for daytime peak demand and daytime lowest demand when available.[37]

Homeowners are not expected to calculate those figures from memory. Share the bills and the normal operating hours, then let the qualified installation team carry out the technical assessment. If the home has unusual loads or a planned change in use, mention it before the proposal is finalised.

What to ask when the home uses power mostly at night

If the house is empty for much of the day, ask how the proposed system treats electricity produced while the home is quiet and the loads that arrive later. Storage may be part of a separate discussion because batteries can hold solar energy for later use, but the equipment, capacity and suitability still need a property-specific assessment.[22]

Each home needs its own conversation. A clear record of the routine gives the installer something real to work with, and it keeps the proposal tied to the way the home is actually used.
